Eric Knowles in First Debate with Congressman Sarbanes: “Sarbanes Says He is with the Federal Government and He is Here to Help”

Olney, MD: Candidate Eric Knowles (MD Congressional District 3) sat down to his first debate with Congressman Sarbanes at the Community Center in Olney Maryland on Tuesday. The debate touched on a number of issues including domestic and foreign policy, economy, healthcare, and finished with a question that asked where the candidates thought the country would look like in ten years. Their debate lasted for about an hour and a half and Eric Knowles was pleased with the outcome. “I am glad to see that Congressman Sarbanes had the courtesy to come to the debate, many of the other Maryland Democratic Congressmen/women have not committed to these types of community forums and I am pleased to see that Mr. Sarbanes was up to the challenge,” said Knowles.

During the debate a stark contrast was made apparent between Congressman Sarbanes and Eric Knowles. On many occasions Eric would speak about constitutional government and its role in American society. Congressman Sarbanes however explained more of the notion that he is with the federal government and he is here to help so to speak. He continued to disagree with Mr. Knowles on the idea that government cannot continue to afford to spend taxpayer’s money that they don’t have; and that it is time to shrink government now and promote economic stability and liberty for future generations.

Knowles commented, “One of my favorite Sarbanes lines was when he said that he believed that the Federal Government was here to help, and he antiquated his role in an example that without federal regulations and the EPA that the Chesapeake Bay could not be the treasure to Maryland that it is now. It’s hard to know how well federal regulations have protected the bay. In my view State government has done a better job as we can see with local laws on dredging and pollution regulations.”

Knowles continued, “My economic policy is in stark contrast to Sarbanes, I actually see the dangers ahead and I am willing to set up policies that will avoid those calamities. From the debate last night we can see that I am willing to do what is difficult yet necessary to avoid an economic disaster, unlike my opponent. Sarbanes wants to continue to the spending trend with only minor to cuts to programs that are politically acceptable to his party line, yet he still believes that spending will create jobs and thinks that Obamacare is good for small businesses. Though the Constitution does not authorize a vast majority of the programs the Federal Government spends our money on, I believe that it would be devastating to cut all the programs immediately and leave those people who are dependent on them stranded. Even though I believe we need to make severe cuts in spending, because the economy is the number one issue, doing this responsibly is crucial. What I can promise is that I will make those responsible choices if I am elected.
